The Big Short is a 3-month long Development Lab supported by BFI Network, Last Conker and BEAM Network. Exclusively for British East and South East Asian [BESEA] screenwriters and/or writer-directors, designed to get their short films ready for fundraising.
The Lab which will be delivered online, includes:
Bespoke one-on-one script development
Introductions to key decision-makers in the film industry
Mentoring from a producer
Support to prepare strong creative statements, pitch decks and applications
Support with building a creative team / networking
Applicants must be British, not a student and have prior experience of making at least one short film. Applications must be made by the screenwriter or writer-director of the screenplay. We are unable to accept applications from students. To apply you need to submit a screenplay [maximum length of 15 pages] and complete the following application form. The script you submit should be the one you intend to develop at the Lab.

What do you mean by BESEA?
We use the term BESEA to mean British people of the following descent and heritage: Brunei, Burma, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, North Korea, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and their diasporas.
I have mixed BESEA heritage - can I apply?
Yes. We welcome applicants with mixed BESEA heritage.
I am not a BESEA screenwriter and/or writer-director, can I still apply?
No. This Lab is specifically for BESEA screenwriters and writer-directors.
I am a BESEA screenwriter but my director and producer are not - can I still apply?
Yes, as long as either the screenwriter and/or writer-director is BESEA you can apply.
I do not have a director or producer attached - can I still apply?
Yes.
My script is not culturally specific to BESEA people, places or narratives - can I still apply?
Yes. We welcome all types of stories and characters. However, we do ask applicants to consider current injustices and interrogate the spaces they occupy and how their stories and voices perpetuate or disrupt systemic inequities.
I am not based in the UK - can I still apply?
No. This Lab is for BESEAs who reside in the UK.
